‘TLC Forever’ Documentary Chronicles Iconic Trio’s Rise to Stardom
TLC Forever, a documentary showcasing the careers of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, is set to premiere on Saturday, June 3.
This week, the official trailer for the Lifetime documentary was released, featuring T-Boz, Chilli, Academy Award winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and Hip Hop icon Missy Elliott.
The two-hour documentary, directed by Matthew Kay, will be simulcast on Lifetime and A&E. Audiences can either discover or revisit the challenges and victories experienced by the “Waterfalls” hitmakers as they climbed to the pinnacle of the music industry.
Formed in the early 1990s, TLC came together under the management of industry veteran Perri “Pebbles” Reid. Pebbles helped the trio secure a label deal with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Antonio “L.A.” Reid’s LaFace Records. TLC’s debut album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, was released in 1992, followed by CrazySexyCool in 1994. Their first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 came with 1999’s FanMail.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified FanMail as 6x-Platinum and CrazySexyCool achieved a Diamond Award with 12x-Platinum status. TLC also boasts four No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2013, VH1 aired the biographical TV movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, featuring Keke Palmer as Chilli, Niatia “Lil Mama” Kirkland as Left Eye, and Drew Sidora as T-Boz. The cast also included Rochelle Aytes, Evan Ross, and Carl Anthony Payne II.
TLC’s journey was not without tragedy. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in a car accident in La Ceiba, Honduras, at the age of 30 in April 2002. T-Boz and Chilli released the 3D album with posthumous vocals from Left Eye in October 2002.
