The Weeknd In a recent Interview Magazine conversation with playwright Jeremy O. Harris, The Weeknd discussed his decision to venture into television with his upcoming HBO series, The Idol. The Canadian singer-songwriter expressed his desire to challenge himself and explore his capabilities as a filmmaker. The Weeknd explained, “I want to challenge myself. That alone ends up challenging my audience because they’ve been on this ride with me for 13, 14 years. They know that I never do anything the same as I did before.” He further emphasized his desire for growth and experimentation, citing the differences between his early works, House of Balloons and Thursday. The artist has long approached his albums with a filmmaker’s mindset, drawing inspiration from the cinematic world. He shared, “Film and TV, mainly film, has always been kind of the heartbeat of everything I do artistically. If you see my music videos, even sonically, everything is so cinematic and referential to films that I obsess over.” The Idol is set to debut at the 2023 Cannes Festival in May. HBO has yet to announce a premiere date for the series.
