Coco Jones Shines at the 2023 BET Awards, Wins Best New Artist
Singer/actress Coco Jones stole the spotlight on social media overnight as she emerged as one of the trending topics.
The talented Bel-Air cast member claimed victory at the prestigious 2023 BET Awards held in Los Angeles.
Jones secured the coveted trophy for Best New Artist, triumphing over strong contenders such as Ambré, Doechii, FLO, GloRilla, Ice Spice, and Lola Brooke in the category. Adding to her achievement, Jones delivered a captivating performance of her 2022 single “ICU” during the ceremony.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, a tearful Coco Jones expressed her appreciation after accepting the Best New Artist award, saying, “Thank you so much, BET. I remember when I did 106 & Park with y’all, I was sixteen… It’s been a long journey.” The 25-year-old former Disney Channel star further thanked her dedicated fanbase, stating, “Thank you guys for rocking with me the whole time. Thank you so much to my culture who has stood beside me.”
Jones also garnered recognition for her song “ICU” from her EP titled What I Didn’t Tell You, as it received an RIAA-certified Gold plaque. The track reached impressive positions on the music charts, peaking at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 18 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Before the release of What I Didn’t Tell You, Coco Jones gained prominence for her appearance in Disney Channel’s Let It Shine television movie, where she starred alongside Tyler James Williams and Trevor Jackson. Currently, she captivates audiences with her role as Hillary Banks in Peacock’s Bel-Air drama series.
The BET Awards celebrated other noteworthy artists as well, with Latto clinching the title of Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Kendrick Lamar securing the accolade for Best Male Hip Hop Artist. Beyoncé and SZA emerged as the evening’s big winners, each triumphing in three categories. Additionally, the legendary Busta Rhymes received the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award, adding further grandeur to the memorable event.
