J. Cole has already made a huge splash in hip-hop for 2018 with the release of his album KOD, in April. Fast forward to August, and now as he is right on the verge of his KOD Tour with Young Thug, he has created another big moment with his new “Album Of The Year” Freestyle, a pleasant surprise for hip-hop listeners everywhere.
Cole hops on the instrumental of Nas’ classic “Oochie Wally” for the new freestyle, and wastes no time, as he proceeds to drop bars immediately. “My mindstate feel like the crime in the summer time/higher than average/lot of cabbage/thank God I never abide by the established/ guidelines that keep niggas in fabrics/ commisioned by the state/ I skate by the masters” Cole raps as he touches on his enlighted mental state that keeps him from participating in a system that aims to imprison people of color, allowing him to “skate by the masters”.
In addition to the excerpt above, Cole drops plenty more clever, deep bars, but also brags on how his album KOD, is indeed the album of the year. “Lets end it on a positive note/come see me live/KOD/album of the year undebatably/my cadence be/ the greatest we’ve/seen since the late MC/who’s name was the/ Notorius.”
