Questlove Wins Best Documentary Award
Questlove won Best Documentary at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards for his directorial debut, Summer of Soul.
The documentary is titled “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).” The film is about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, also known as Black Woodstock. It contains footage from performances by Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, B.B King, and other musicians from that era. Questlove spoke with The L.A. Times, comparing the making of the film to creating art during the period of the documentary’s focus. During his interview, he said, “I really connected with this tail of being creative in a time of stress, working on a film about creatives who got together in a time of stress.” Questlove is nominated for a Grammy, BAFTA, and the Academy Award for Documentary Feature for Summer of Soul.
