Mutulu Shukur The Parole Commission has granted Mutulu Shukur’s freedom to spend his final days with his family and friends. The black liberation elder has spent over 36 years behind bars and is terminally ill. Activists have been fighting for a long time to get him released. Shakur’s attorney Brad Thomson said doctors had determined he only had six months to live in May, dying of bone marrow cancer. “We are relieved that the Parole Commission now recognizes what has long been true – that Dr. Shakur’s release poses no risk whatsoever,” Thomson said. “It is tragic that it took until he was on the verge of death for that truth to finally be realized.” Mutulu Shukur has been eligible for parole for a long time. In 1998, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted of multiple charges, including conspiracy to violate the RICO Act. His supporters have argued that his actions were political and not criminal. Mutulu Shukur is also the stepfather of the late, Tupac Shakur.
