Missy Elliott’s Unprecedented Legacy in Hip Hop Recognized with Honors and Accolades
The National Museum of African American Music will pay tribute to Missy Elliott, one of Hip Hop’s most ground-breaking artists.
This recognition is part of the Celebration of Legends event, which will also acknowledge the contributions of Atlantic Records, Elliott’s long-standing record label.
Missy Elliott expressed her gratitude on Monday via Twitter, saying, “I am forever grateful for the countless blessings. I was on the brink of giving up, but it was clear there was more to come for me. I’m humbly thankful for every single one of these blessings.”
This year, the National Museum of African American Music launched the “This is Hip Hop” exhibit that will be open for an entire year. This exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop culture, showcasing the work of four prominent photographers.
Recently, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that Missy Elliott will be the first female rapper to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Elliott will be inducted alongside renowned artists such as George Michael, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, Willie Nelson, among others.
In 2021, Missy Elliott was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. She continued to make her mark in 2022 when a wax figure of her was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas.
With over 200 awards to her name, including four Grammy Awards, Melissa “Missy” Elliott’s impactful career in the music industry is evident. Her discography boasts six Platinum-certified albums, with her 2002 album, Under Construction, earning a 2x-Platinum recognition from the RIAA.
