Killer Mike’s Greenwood Expands its Reach, Acquiring Fintech Firm Kinly and Two Black-Owned Companies
Killer Mike, renowned rapper and political activist, is also a successful entrepreneur in the banking and finance sectors. Under his real name, Michael Render, he co-founded Greenwood in 2020 alongside former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young, with the goal of empowering Black and Brown communities, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Currently valued at $325 million, Greenwood recently acquired two Black-owned companies: The Gathering Spot, an Atlanta-based networking hub and workspace, and Valence, an online career development platform. The company has also purchased Kinly, a fintech firm focused on serving Black customers.
Previously rivals, Greenwood and Kinly have now joined forces. Donald Hawkins, CEO and founder of Missouri-based Kinly, cited the African proverb: “You want to go fast, go alone, you want to go far, you know, go together.” Both companies launched within a month of each other in 2020.
While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Hawkins will join Greenwood as a vice president. Greenwood’s CEO, Ryan Glover, emphasizes the importance of a diverse group of individuals and organizations working together to close the generational wealth gap in the United States.
Thanks to Killer Mike’s leadership, Greenwood secured a $45 million funding round led by Black-founded investment firm Pendulum, which will further support the company’s mission to serve and empower its approximately 150,000 banking customers effectively.
