Hip-Hop Legend Grandmaster Flash Inspires New Graduates, Receives Honorary Doctorate at Lehman College
Influential Hip-Hop pioneer, Grandmaster Flash, spoke on his modest origins, attributing his success to his Bronx roots during the Lehman College 2023 Spring Commencement Ceremony in the Bronx, New York, on Thursday (Jun. 1).
On this special occasion, he was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Music.
In addition to Flash, the esteemed event saw the participation of former New York State Representative José Rivera as the guest speaker, who was also granted an honorary degree. During his stirring speech, Grandmaster Flash delved into the evolution of Hip-Hop as this genre proudly observes its 50th anniversary this year.
He detailed his groundbreaking “quick mix theory,” a unique method he crafted to seamlessly blend two tracks playing the same sample on different turntables, enabling a continuous loop.
“Hailing from the Bronx, we are initiators and finishers, playing a crucial role,” he passionately conveyed. “To the young minds here today, as you step into the world, you might stumble just as I did… errors were frequent on my path to success. I assure you, you will encounter setbacks, but we, the people of the Bronx, persevere.”
The celebrated DJ further expressed, “Equipped with modern advancements—computers, advanced studio technology, engineering tools, social media, and the internet—you all have a significant advantage in becoming the next leaders in your fields. The world is at your fingertips.”

Flash continued with fervor, “I recall asserting on my tours, ‘the Bronx is significant.’ Hip Hop originated here, in the Bronx. Now, standing before you all, I declare that the next wave of innovation lies within you. The baton is passed to you now. You represent the future.”
Although Grandmaster Flash has been decorated with numerous prestigious awards, including a lifetime achievement Grammy and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he expressed that this particular recognition held a special place in his heart. While he was conferred with an honorary doctorate from Buffalo State College last May, he professed that this degree was of unparalleled importance, as it was awarded in his cherished hometown.
