Veteran comedian Eddie Murphy is purportedly engaged in discussions to star as the lead in an upcoming reboot of the classic “Pink Panther” franchise, according to insiders at The Hollywood Reporter. Murphy’s representatives have yet to respond to the emerging reports. It’s said that Jeff Fowler, the filmmaker behind “Sonic the Hedgehog”, has already committed to directing the movie, with Chris Bremner lined up to craft the screenplay. The reboot is set to combine live-action sequences with computer-generated imagery (CGI), signaling a fresh direction for the franchise. An unprecedented ‘buddy cop’ dynamic is hinted, with the plot centered around Clouseau and the Panther collaborating on screen for the first time. The original “Pink Panther” film, starring Peter Sellers as the bumbling French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau, was directed by Blake Edwards and launched in 1963. Several sequels ensued, including a reboot in 2006 and its sequel in 2009, both featuring Steve Martin in the leading role. Murphy, who cites Sellers as one of his comedic influences, recently featured in “Coming 2 America” and “You People.” He is currently filming “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley,” reprising his iconic title role, and a festive comedy, “Candy Cane Lane.”
