Angela Bassett Renowned actress Angela Bassett, beloved by many fans, has long been regarded as an acting legend. However, her lack of a competitive Oscar win throughout her illustrious career has left many supporters disheartened. Addressing this oversight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) recently announced its decision to bestow Angela Bassett with an Academy Honorary Award. In an official press release, the AMPAS Board of Governors revealed that Angela Bassett, along with EGOT winner Mel Brooks and editor Carol Littleton, will receive honorary Oscars at the upcoming 14th Governors Awards event on November 18. Furthermore, the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to Michelle Satter from the Sundance Institute. Expressing enthusiasm over the selections, Academy President Janet Yang stated, “The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans. Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.” Yang further remarked, “Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humor, and his legacy has made a lasting impact on every facet of entertainment. Carol Littleton’s career in film editing serves as a model for those who come after her. A pillar of the independent film community, Michelle Satter has played a vital role in the careers of countless filmmakers around the world.” This announcement comes in the wake of Angela Bassett’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2023 for her exceptional performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Additionally, she received a Best Actress nomination in 1994 for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” Over her impressive five-decade tenure in Hollywood, Angela Bassett has graced the silver screen in various notable films, including “Boyz n the Hood,” “Malcolm X,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “Notorious,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” While her career has garnered numerous industry accolades, including multiple Golden Globe Awards and NAACP Image Awards, the absence of a competitive Oscar has been a glaring omission. Nevertheless, with the upcoming Academy Honorary Award, Angela Bassett’s remarkable contributions to the film industry will be duly recognized, further solidifying her status as an iconic figure in the world of acting.
