The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) just announced that Ellen DeGeneres is set to receive the Carol Burnett Award at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. This will make her the second person to ever receive this award. Of course the first was its namesake, Carol Burnett, who was just honored this past January. The award is chosen by the HFPA board of directors and presented annually to a person who has made “outstanding contributions to television on and off the screen.” It is also equivalent to the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Ellen is being honored for her career which we all know began as an emcee at a comedy club in her hometown of New Orleans. Her stand up career led to her 1990s comedy series “Ellen,” during which she became the first lead actor in a sitcom to come out as a homosexual. Her very popular daytime talk show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” has been running for 17 years now and she just recently announced in May that she extended her contract to host the show through 2022. In addition, DeGeneres has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights, and in 2018 established The Ellen Fund, which supports global conservation efforts for critically endangered species. NBC will broadcast the 77th Golden Globes live on Sunday, January 5, 2020. This is a very well deserved honor. Way to go Ellen!!!
