There has been tons of national coverage surrounding Jemel Roberson, a Chicago security guard who police gunned down while he was trying to detain suspect in a shooting last week. Chicago native Kanye West is now stepping up to help Jemel’s family out after the tragedy. Kanye reportedly donated a substantial amount of money to Roberson’s family, via their GoFundMe account.
Roberson’s unfortunate death took place on Sunday (Nov. 11). He was working as an armed security guard at Manny’s Blue Room Bar in Chicago when he had to remove some wild drunken patrons from the bar. Next a disgryntled patron returned with a gun and started firing. Witnesses say that Roberson began to return fire, and subdue one of the suspects. He then held him at gun point until police arrived. When police arrived, they instantly shot and killed Roberson, despite witnesses telling them that he was the good guy.
Roberson’s family started the GoFundMe with a goal of raising $10,000. After they reached $10k, the goal moved to $150,000. Kanye has since come forward with a donation of $150,000. Now donations have reached upwards of $305,000 total.
