The CW network has green-lit a new reality singing competition. Expected to debut this summer, “The Star Next Door” will feature Queen Latifah, Gloria Estefan and John Rich of country duo Big & Rich as its judges/mentors.
Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment will produce the series alongside CBS’ Raquel Productions and 25/7 Productions. The series was developed by “The Biggest Loser” creator Dave Broome.
The show’s premise does not seem to veer far from the tried-and-true “American Idol” formula. Describing the show’s structure, THR says “Star” mentors Latifah, Estefan and Rich will travel the country searching for “the best and brightest to compete and represent their home towns when they face-off in Hollywood.”
“The Star Next Door” will join an already crowded slate of reality singing competitions, some of which are not doing so hot in the ratings.
In addition to “The X Factor,” “Idol” and “The Voice,” the crowded reality singing marketplace includes “The Sing Off,” “The Glee Project,” “America’s Got Talent,” “Majors & Minors” and others.
