The world tragically lost Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the esteemed “Princess of R&B,” in a plane crash on August 25, 2001, when she was just 21 years old. Despite her untimely passing in the Bahamas, Aaliyah left an enduring legacy in the music industry. An upcoming one-hour special titled ‘Superstar: Aaliyah’ by ABC News is set to delve into the life of the late music icon. Scheduled for June 14 at 10 pm ET on ABC, the special will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day. ‘Superstar: Aaliyah’ promises to chart the singer’s journey from an aspiring teen artist to a music sensation topping the charts. The special will also scrutinize the controversy surrounding her illegal marriage to R. Kelly, a convicted sex offender. The television special features David Sloan as the senior executive producer, Muriel Pearson as an executive producer, and Gabriel Noble as a producer. A host of notable personalities will appear for interview segments. Damon “Dame” Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records and Aaliyah’s boyfriend at the time of her death, will make an appearance in the special. Additionally, an exclusive interview was given by Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah’s manager and uncle. The show will also include guest appearances from musicians Justine Skye, Sevyn Streeter, and will.i.am. Furthermore, fashion designers Karl Kani and Aleali May will discuss Aaliyah’s unique style. Before her untimely death, Aaliyah released three studio albums, 1994’s ‘Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number,’ 1996’s ‘One in a Million,’ and the 2001 self-titled ‘Aaliyah.’ Her single “Try Again” from 2000 topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The ‘I Care 4 U’ compilation album, released posthumously a year after her fatal accident, was a significant addition to her discography. Two years ago, the majority of Aaliyah’s musical works were finally made available on streaming services by Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records 2.0.
