Taylor Swift Taylor Swift denies she copied lyrics from the 3LW song, “Playas Gon’ Play,” for her hit song “Shake It Off.” She submitted a sworn declaration insisting she wrote her song entirely and did not get any lyrics from anywhere else. Songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued Swift in 2017, accusing her of copying their 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play,” performed by 3LW. Swift says in her declaration, “Until learning about Plaintiffs’ claim in 2017, I had never heard the song song ‘Playas Gon’ Play’ and had never heard of that song or the group 3LW.” She claimed she would barely have had an opportunity to hear the song as her parents didn’t allow her to watch MTV’s TRL until she was about 13 years old. Her legal team is arguing the phrase “players gonna play” and “haters gonna hate” are both common and popular.
