In Memoriam: Stars We Lost In 2011

This year we lost some of our brightest stars: artists that spanned the genres of rock, hip-hop and pop, as well as TV and film. They were at different stages in their careers — some just starting to rise, others already legends — but all left a distinct mark on pop culture, and their deaths affected us deeply. Beloved hip-hop icons Nate Dogg and Heavy D influenced the generations of artists who followed them. Nate (born Nathaniel Hale) died at age 41 after suffering several health setbacks related to a stroke. One of the key players in the birth of the West Coast G-Funk sound, the crooner’s silky smooth vocals touched classic tracks from Snoop Dogg and Warren G to 50 Cent and Ludacris. Fun-loving Heavy D, a major force in the New Jack Swing era, had hits with songs like “We Found Love” and “Nuttin’ But Love,” but he had also branched out into film and theater. He was 44 when he died this past fall. We lost Mike Starr, former bassist for the groundbreaking Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains. Like Amy Winehouse, who also died this year at the age of 27, Starr’s talent was often overshadowed by dependency on alcohol and drugs. Gun violence claimed the life of 22-year-old Montae Talbert, the Cali Swag District dancer otherwise known as M-Bone. And Australian actor Andy Whitfield, who got his big break when he was cast as the lead in the Starz TV series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” was 39 when he succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Finally, the MTV family mourned the death of “Jackass” daredevil and “Viva La Bam” star Ryan Dunn. The 34-year-old died on a rural Pennsylvania road along with his 30-year-old passenger, Zachary Hartwell, when their car slammed into a guardrail and caught fire.

VIDEO: Rick Ross Speaks on ‘Rich Forever’ & Joint Album With Drake

Last week Rick Ross announced the title of his upcoming mixtape on Twitter, writing ““my new mixtape #richforever coming asap.” Shortly after, Ross began tweeting a series of photos via Instagram, which showed him on set filming the visuals for the mixtape’s title track “Rich Forever.” He was joined by Drake, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill and French Montana. Rick Ross Announces Plans To Drop A New Mixtape Over the past few days, Ross has continued to tweet up a storm about his new project, even posting new photos on his tumblr page richforever.tumblr.com. The mixtape, hosted by DJ Scream and Shaheem Reid, will feature all new material and it will hold fans over until his delayed fifth studio album God Forgives, I Don’t finally drops early in 2012. Ross’ Rich Forever will be a follow up to Ross’ Albert Anastasia EP and the Ashes To Ashes mixtape, which featured the popular singles “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast),” and “Super High.” In addition to his solo album and Rich Forever, Ross and Drake are also at work on a collaboration project titled Y.O.L.O. The MMG CEO told MTV News that he hopes the joint effort will morph into an official album. Rick Ross speaks on ‘Y.O.L.O.’ mixtape with Drake below:

Ludacris’ ‘Ludaversal’ Album Release Date Set

Last year, we got an appetizer to the album with 1.21 Giggawatts and now it looks like Ludacris is back to work. He spoke with Billboard and confirmed that his new project… Ludaversal will be out sometime in May. Here’s what Luda had to say about his new album:

Beats By Dr. Dre Is Splitting From Monster Cable

Beats by Dr. Dre is going solo. On Thursday Business Week reported that Dr. Dre and Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine will part ways with Monster Cable, the company that they partnered with to release their ubiquitous line of high-end headphones. At the end of the year Beats Electronics’ five-year contact with Monster will end and Dre and Iovine have decided not to renew. Both companies are maintaining that the split is an amicable one. Beats by Dr. Dre set a new standard in the headphone business, selling designer headphones at high price points and making a ton of dough along the way. Business Week reports that last year Beats products captured 53 percent of the $1 billion annual headphone market. Once the split is official Beats will retain the rights to the sound technology, design and the brand that they develop in conjunction with Monster. Monster maintains that they will be fine without Dre and Iovine. “We’re competing with ourselves,” Monster chief executive Noel Lee said of the eventual competition he will face with the company he’s helped to create. “We can be the Apple of the headphones space, with or without Beats.” Beats however doesn’t seem content with just the headphone market. Already the company has placed the sound technology in computers (Hewlett-Packard), cars (the Chrysler 300 S sedan) and in HTC smartphones.

Music fans across the globe were dealt a heavy blow on Jan. 20 when soul legend Etta James passed away after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Throughout her decades-long career, James left an indelible imprint on the hearts and ears of millions of fans and inspired generations of artists in the years since her debut. Nicki Minaj fans are going to have to wait a bit longer for the rapper’s sophomore album. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was originally scheduled for a Valentine’s Day release. The YMCMB rapstress took to Twitter to announce the push back. “New Album Date: April 3rd. Pink Friday: ROMAN RELOADED. But have no fear. Tons of suprises before then . Love Always, HB” Nicki tweeted about an hour after debuting her colorful, Hype Williams directed video for “Stupid Hoe.”
